Readers form different impressions of us and our ideas depending on how we say things.

Take a look:

We show that the corrected limited commitment estimator remains consistent even when direct effects are present. This estimator is a modification of the limited commitment estimator of ABC (2001) that allows for many exogenous covariates.

Our fifth contribution is an estimator that is consistent.  Importantly, we are the first, to our knowledge, to be able to show that the corrected limited commitment estimator remains consistent even when direct effects are present. The corrected limited commitment estimator that we construct allows for many exogenous covariates. In contrast, the limited commitment estimator of ABC (2001) does not remain consistent in the presence of direct effects.

I show that, with a slight modification, ABC's (2001) limited commitment estimator—you know, the one that allows for many exogenous covariates—is consistent even when there are direct effects.

The demonstration of the corrected limited commitment estimator is undertaken.  The remaining consistency of the corrected limited commitment estimator is demonstrated in the presence of direct effects. The construction of the corrected limited commitment estimator is undertaken by the modification of a prior limited commitment estimator presented in ABC (2001).  The prior limited commitment estimator presented in ABC (2001) is identified as the estimator that allows for many exogenous covariates.

And what becometh of the corrected limited commitment estimator?  Lo! In the face of direct effects, this true estimator doth remain ever consistent!  How may such a thing be, ye ask.  Faith, thus it is, as the trusty estimator is a modification of the limited commitment estimator that prod forth from the mine of knowledge in ABC (2001), that rarest of estimators that allows for many exogenous covariates.

What do we show?  We show that the corrected limited commitment estimator remains consistent even when direct effects are present. How did we create such an estimator?  We modified the limited commitment estimator of ABC (2001).  Why did we modify that particular estimator?  We modified it because it allows for many exogenous covariates.

Changing your sentence style can change your rapport with readers, but it can also help you move your writing forward.  So the next time you are stuck in a writing rut, try a dramatically different style.  You might be surprised by what you learn both about your personal writing style and about the underlying ideas.
